Built the App, But Need UX Help? A Pre-Launch UX Review Can Make a Big Difference

29.09.2026

An app can be technically sound, feature complete and close to launch, but still not feel quite right to use.

Perhaps development began without dedicated UX design input. An internal team or developer may have designed the interface as the product evolved, or AI-assisted tools may have helped get an idea surprisingly far.

Then, as launch approaches, the gaps become more apparent. Navigation feels harder than it should. Important actions are difficult to find. User testing uncovers problems that were not obvious to the team building the product.

At this point, organisations can assume they have left it too late to bring in a UX designer. That is not necessarily the case.

UX support does not have to mean going back to the drawing board

We are increasingly asked to review apps and digital products that are already well into development. The objective is not to question everything that has already been done or recommend a complete redesign. It is to identify where UX expertise can make the greatest difference with the time and resources available.

What does a pre-launch UX review look at?

The scope depends on the product and how far development has progressed, but we start by looking at the experience from the user's perspective.

Can people understand where they are and what they need to do? Are journeys intuitive? Are calls to action clear? Are interactions consistent? Can users recover easily when something goes wrong?

Where user testing has already taken place, we can use those findings to focus attention on known areas of difficulty.

Prioritising what matters before launch

When launch is only weeks away, a lengthy UX report is not particularly helpful. The important question is: what should be fixed now?

We prioritise recommendations according to their impact on the user experience and the likely effort involved in implementing them.

Some may be quick wins, such as changing a label, improving the hierarchy of a screen or simplifying a step. Others may identify more significant issues that should be addressed before launch or added to the product roadmap.

The result is a practical set of priorities that the development team can act on.

What level of UX support does an app need?

Not every product needs the same level of intervention. Sometimes described as a UX audit, usability audit or app UX review, the scope can be light-touch or more detailed depending on the stage of development and the issues identified.

For an app approaching launch, a light-touch UX review may be enough. We can independently review the product, identify usability issues and provide prioritised recommendations for the existing development team.

Where there are more significant challenges, we can go deeper with user research, usability testing, journey mapping, wireframing, prototyping or interface design.

In either case, we can work alongside existing developers and technical teams, adding the UX expertise needed to strengthen the platform already being built. We have experience working with Microsoft Azure and Dynamics development teams, as well as projects built across a wide range of web and application development platforms.

Is it too late to bring in a UX designer?

Earlier UX involvement would usually have been preferable, but there can still be considerable value in reviewing a product towards the end of development.

At this stage, the app or online service is tangible enough to evaluate properly. Real journeys can be tested and there is still an opportunity to resolve important usability issues before launch.

The key is to be pragmatic. The aim is not to redesign the product from scratch, but to identify the changes that will make the biggest difference from where the product is today.

A fresh pair of eyes before launch

After months of development, it can be difficult for a project team to see where something that feels obvious internally may be confusing to somebody using it for the first time.

An independent UX review brings a fresh perspective and puts the user back at the centre of the product before launch.

At Path, we provide both light-touch UX reviews and deeper UX design support for apps, portals and other digital products already in development.

If an app is approaching launch and there are concerns about usability, it may not be too late to improve it. A focused review and a relatively small number of well-judged changes can make a substantial difference.

This approach can work particularly well for organisations that have an app, portal or digital product already in development but do not have dedicated UX expertise within the project team. We can work directly with product owners, internal teams and existing developers to identify and resolve usability issues before launch.

Recent Experience

In a recent project, Path was brought in by Munster Technological University (MTU) towards the end of an application's development to provide independent UX expertise before launch. Rather than recommending a wholesale redesign, we identified and prioritised improvements that could realistically be implemented within the remaining development programme.

FAQs

Can you review an app that has already been developed?

Yes. We can review an existing app, prototype or product already in development and identify improvements without requiring the project to start again.

How long does a UX review take?

The scope can range from a focused expert review to a more detailed programme involving research and usability testing. For products approaching launch, we can tailor the review around the available timeframe.

Can you work with our existing app developer?

Yes. Path can provide UX expertise alongside an existing developer or development team, providing practical recommendations they can implement.

Do we need a full UX audit?

Not necessarily. Some products benefit from a detailed UX audit, while others need a focused review of key journeys or known usability issues. We recommend an approach based on the stage of the product and the problems that need to be resolved.
