The Heritage Council
What We Did
- Accessibility Audit
- Accessibility Improvements
- Official Languages Compliance
We helped the Heritage Council bring their 6-year-old website up to modern accessibility and compliance standards, all within the constraints of the existing site structure and design.
Objectives
- Identify and remove accessibility barriers in line with WCAG 2.2 Level AA
- Ensure compliance with the Official Languages Act
- Improve clarity, usability and performance without rebuilding the site
- Enable better user experience across mobile and desktop
Approach
We began with a detailed accessibility audit of the existing platform, covering structure, navigation, content, forms, and language switching. This included:
- Manual testing against WCAG 2.2
- Bilingual content review
- Technical and UX recommendations
Working within the existing design framework, we implemented updates that improved keyboard access, screen reader compatibility, form usability, and content clarity. We also advised on performance and editorial best practices to support long-term maintainability and low-carbon impact.
Outcome
The Heritage Council now has a compliant, more inclusive platform that better reflects its public service role. The updates improve access for users with disabilities, support the use of both Irish and English, and ensure the website aligns with national and EU digital standards, serving the organisation until a new website can be developed.
This project demonstrates how legacy platforms can be made more accessible and sustainable with a focused, strategic approach.
