Co-Art: Reimagining Opera with Communities & Technology

What we did
- Collaborative Workshops
- Naming
- Content Architecture
- Universal and Low-Carbon Design
- Website Development
A website showcasing the findings of a groundbreaking European research project on co-creation with communities in the arts, using new technologies, serving as a hub to share results, resources, and spark inspiration among peers.
Overview
Artists, technologists and researchers worked with communities to co-create three innovative operas. This website tells their story, what they did, what they learnt and what it could mean for the future of opera, with resources and toolkits for opera producers to explore co-creation.

The Challenge
The Traction Project pioneered co-creating three operas with communities using new technologies. The final output of the project was a new online platform to share the learnings and outcomes of the project, fostering engagement with the concept of co-creation and encouraging its adoption.
Targeting an audience knowledgeable in opera but potentially unfamiliar with co-creation, the challenge lay in simplifying and demystifying co-creation to catalyse new collaborative projects.
With a wealth of content and assets at hand, the client sought an intuitive information architecture prioritising user experience above all else.

The Approach
Through collaborative workshops with project stakeholders, we crafted a cohesive structure and compelling narrative for the website, ensuring a clear user journey for visitors to explore the project.
In addition, we developed a distinctive name, logo, and website design to represent Co-art consistently and coherently.
Our thoughtful approach to information architecture and content design simplified the complex subject matter, facilitating learning and engagement while allowing Co-art to articulate its story with clarity.

The Result
- Thoughtful information architecture and content design simplified this intricate subject matter, enabling audiences to learn and engage effectively, while allowing Co-art's narrative to shine through with clarity.
- The website harmonises with the project's values and objectives, ensuring alignment with its mission.
- Employing responsive design, it guarantees a seamless user experience across all devices, regardless of screen size.
- Meeting the Web Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.1 Level AA, it ensures inclusivity for all users.
- Recognised for its excellence, the website boasts an award-winning design, endorsed by an international design jury at the prestigious IDI Irish Design Awards 2023.
🏆 Winner ‘Universal Design’ - IDI Irish Design Awards 2023
Overall this is a really good example of digital experience design. Understanding the problem space and target audiences, and designing on-point solution in an innovative and engaging way to solve for both. Attention to cross-channel performance, audience accessibility, carbon impact, and front-end design quality takes this to the next level.
IDI Awards 2025
Despite close competition, Co-Art stands out as the winner. It uses a Universal Design approach to challenge tradition in an inclusive and innovative way. By applying co-creation methods, it ensured inclusion through a creative and sustainable format that increased its appeal to new target groups and audiences.
